Turn Readings Into Effective Consultation – Bazi (UDP)
As many of you may know, I do consultations for career progression and business improvement. One of the main tools used during my consultation is – Bazi (八字), a traditional Chinese astrology system plotted based on a person’s year of birth.
One of the stumbling blocks for beginner users of the Bazi while doing consultations is to establish relevance. If you have been trying to perform some Bazi consultation, you will know what I mean. The information seems to be everywhere but doesn’t seem to be useful in a practical sense. They are just either too general or unrelated at all!
To make use of Bazi, a consultant would need to assist the asker to establish a framework of relevance.
One of the simplest methods is to use a 3 step (UDP) progressive approach:-
- Understand the issue/focus of the subject/topic in discussion. (Domain Knowledge)
- Diagnose the cause that led to the issues. (Past Occurrence / Past Experience)
- Prescribe the possible actions that the asker could take. (Believe / Confident)
For example:-
- Askers got laid off during the crisis, unable to get new jobs. (Issue)
- After probing, askers skill is no longer relevant to the current market (Domain / Experience/Proof)
- Possibility to obtain new skills that are relevant to the industry and market
(Confidence to change)
Based on the example given above, you may note that the simple 3 steps (UDP) approach requires some form of understanding of the subject/topic/domain/experience in discussion.
Without relevant domain knowledge, the consultant would not be able to diagnose what is the possible issue and may suggest a wrong prescription as he/she may not be familiar with the topic. The suggestions could end up being too general to establish action, for example: “you may learn a new business skill”.
On the other hand, many consultants subscribe to the notation of “predicting” the asker’s issue. While this is certainly possible and does look “cool” and “entertaining” if they got right, prescribing a solid action plan ultimately requires the consultant’s domain knowledge in the subject/topic.
